Chimney Maintenance

Nothing beats the warm, ambient atmosphere that a fireplace can provide; however, the chimneys that provide ventilation for your fires need periodic maintenance and cleaning, much like most other things. Over time, chimneys gather creosote, a carbonaceous chemical. The sticky layer of creosote that resides on the inside walls of your chimney is highly flammable; because of this, it is important to have a regulated cleaning schedule for your chimney.

How do I know if my chimney needs cleaning?

• Fire burns too slowly or too dimly.
• When lit, the fire fills the room with smoke.
• The chimney emits a bad odor.
• If you look inside the chimney (while wearing goggles and a dust mask) and there is a layer of creosote at least 1/8 of an inch.
